T-10:   SDI Best Practices with GeoNode

 While in the past Spatial Data Infrastructure efforts have produced portals and top-down organization, a new paradigm is emerging.  We know now that collaborative action is the secret to effective information management.  Enter the GeoNode, an open source SDI project developed by a partnership of the World Bank's CAPRA initiative, OpenGeo, and others.  

  The GeoNode is designed around the philosophy that the strongest and most flexible infrastructure is built bottom-up.  The vitality of your SDI depends on the engagement of your data's users and responsiveness to their needs.  The GeoNode puts the user at the center of your SDI.  It integrates data catalogues with web GIS tools and Web 2.0 features to create a participatory environment of geospatial data.  

  Attendees to this introduction to the GeoNode will learn how to bring the best practices of the web to their Spatial Data Infrastructure.  After an overview of the bottom-up philosophy guiding the GeoNode project, we will explore how its features embody these ideas, including:
  * Web tools for uploading data and annotating with metadata
  * The use of user profiles, automated statistics gathering, and Web 2.0 features to inform metadata and catalogue search
  * Applications for data editing, styling, and map composition
  * Plugable architecture for extending SDI's with targeted applications
  * Installation and deployment of the GeoNode
