Title

HYBRID CLOUD COMPUTING FOR FOSS4G

Abstract

Cloud Computing is one of the major trends in current IT. It allows companies to scale their applications on demand by using i.e. virtualization methods. In general, two different approaches for deploying Cloud Computing applications can be identified. For Private Clouds internal infrastructures are used and for Public Clouds external infrastructure of so-called Cloud Providers are used. Both approaches have different advantages and disadvantages especially when it comes to security and financial aspects. To benefit from both however, Hybrid Clouds are regarded as an appropriate solution. In Hybrid Clouds, applications are scaled on internal and external infrastructure, depending on the specific requirements of the application expressed as Quality of Service parameters. For implementing Cloud Computing, Open Source solutions are available (e.g. Eucalyptus). This talk will describe an Open Source-based solution for Hybrid Clouds. In particular, the Eucalyptus framework and a self-developed schedular for Pubic Clouds (such as Amazon) are used. Moreover, the talk will demonstrate the applicability of Hybrid Clouds for Open Source-based Geospatial Web Services, such as the 52°North Web Processing Service. We will demonstrate, how such a Hybrid Cloud is set up and how a WPS can be deployed in such a scalable infrastructure for a real world application scenario.
