INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION ON THE OSGEO4W PACKAGE
Abstract
OSGeo for Windows, or OSGeo4W, is a Windows-based package and installer maintained by OSGeo that contains OSGeo mapping software as well as other important Open Source mapping programs. The goal of the installer is to create an easy to use environment for installing and updating various packages, on the Windows operating system. Development of the installer began in 2008 and is still on-going. OSGeo4W is a significant development as it strives to deliver Open Source Geospatial solutions to a majority of computer users across the globe.
Based on our experiences in holding multi-linguistic and multi-cultural training sessions using the OSGeo4W package, several limitations in OSGeo4W were identified. Through our training sessions we need to cater to wider audience, so we saw several improvements needed in OSGeo4W: improvements in packaging technology, better documentation, internationalization of the package, and localization of the installer.
In 2010 through a joint project funded by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), with a partnership of Osaka City University, Applied Technology Co., Tezukayama Gakuin University in Japan, as well as Gateway Geomatics in Canada, the OSGeo4W package and documentation were enhanced to include internalization and and support for the Microsoft Windows-7 operating system. This presentation will describe the progress and enhancements of the OSGeo4W project, with the aim of broadening the OSGeo community base.
