COMPARISON OF SOS-SERVERS: 52°NORTH, UMN AND DEEGREE
Abstract
Real-time geodata becomes today more and more important in decision-making processes. Therefore it is necessary to provide sensor data by known and standardized interfaces. This task is taken into account by the Sensor Web Enablement initiative of the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC). Since the OGC released the Sensor Observation Service (SOS) standard in 2007 several implementations of the standard in different server-environments came up to market. Although SOS is not such a common standard like the OGC Web Map Service or Web Feature Service it comes more into practical use. Because of the lack of experience with this relatively new standard it is difficult to compare the server-software in sight of usability, capabilities or the implementation of optional features.
We worked intensively with the 52°North SOS-Server and the UMN Mapserver in several projects. In the talk we try to give an overview about the most important capabilities, such as usability, speed and flexibility of the mentioned SOS-Servers. The talk will not try to give an advice of usage, more an overview which might help to decide, what software is the best for which use-case.
