THE WEB MAPPING PORTAL OF THE SWISS FEDERAL INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY

Abstract

The Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Lausanne (EPFL) has chosen the MapFish Web Mapping framework to build its new Web 2.0 portal. Based the MapFish framework, rich and innovative functionalities were implemented in this project/solution:

• A slippy map displays the campus, merging OpenStreetMap (OSM) data for the surroundings and AutoCAD plans for the local buildings/rooms. This map is available for all of the 14 floor levels. A dedicated flight was done during the project to acquire high resolution aerial images (5cm/pixel).

• A routing module allows for finding a person or a room, indicating floor changes and special routes for the disabled.

• The MapFish API makes it easy for the EPFL collaborators to include maps in the EPFL's Content Management System (CMS), for example in over 2'000 personal Intranet homepages.

• The Google Earth panel displays the 3D view of the campus, synchronized with the map 2D view. A dedicated flight was done to acquire a highly precise 3D model which was then loaded onto the Google Earth servers in order to be streamed.

• A mobile version for cell phones using WebKit browsers (I Phone, Android, etc..) is also available. This mobile version is based on the IOL library and allows to navigate and search on the campus from any location.

 

The application is highly performant and scalable; thanks to the simple principles of the REST architecture, continuous integration is on track for the coming years.

 

This presentation describes the architecture of the solution, the implementation of the main functionalities and the key success factors of such a project.
