Title
BEETLE PROJECT: A FREE GEOSPATIAL ETL TOOL
Abstract
ETL (Extract, Transform and Load) tools allow data-flow modeling for automatic execution of repetitive processes. The information exchange between two different heterogeneous data models is a good example of the kind of task that can be performed using ETL software.
The Kettle project is an ETL tool with LGPL license (Library General Public License) that uses grid computing (parallel and distributed execution) in order to process huge amounts of data in a limited time. Kettle combines powerful execution in server mode, together with a very intuitive desktop tool to model processes as well as allowing set up of execution parameters. GeoKettle is an extension of Kettle that gives the possibility to deal with data with a spatial component, although it can only handle vector data and has very few specific spatial functions.
The European Topic Centre on Land Use and Spatial Information (ETC-LUSI) is working on a complementary project called: BeETLe, which intends to extend dramatically the analytical capacities and spatial transformations within GeoKettle. Sextante has been chosen for this purpose because it includes a spatial analysis library with more than two hundreds algorithms for raster and vector data. The aim of the BeETLe project is to integrate the collection of Sextante algorithms within GeoKettle, in such a way that they will be available as transformations in GeoKettle.
The main goals of the BeETLe project are:
-
Automatization of spatial analysis processes and repetitive transformations with spatial data.
-
Parallel and distributed execution (grid computing).
-
Capacity to process huge volume of data without memory limitations.
-
Raster and vector data support.
The current users of Sextante will discover that BeETLe provides an intuitive and simple way to work, by adding to Sextante all the power that ETL tools offer to process and transform information stored in a database.
