Title

ENHANCED PARTICIPATORY MAPPING OF MOUNTAINOUS LANDSCAPES WITH MAPWINDOW-GIS AND PARTICIPATORY-3D MAPS IN CLAVERIA, MINDANAO, THE PHILIPPINES

Abstract

The rapid encroachment of unsustainable cropping systems in the mountainous areas of the Philippines has resulted to the degradation of watersheds. Mapping mountainous landscapes is important to be able to identify critical watersheds that provide water and other vital environmental services for communities in the catchment areas. This poster will present an on-going community-based participatory mapping of Claveria, in Mindanao, the Philippines. The mapping initiative is collaboration between the local government, an NGO and a community college to build a GIS-based natural resource map of the area. We will present an outline of methods to build a GIS system for Claveria using tools available in MapWindow (ver 4.7) and participatory approaches. We describe the basic phases in producing a Participatory-3D map model, a stand-alone scale relief representation of the study area, to promote local spatial learning and enhance the outputs of MapWindow. The integration of MapWindow with Participatory 3D Mapping has resulted to the identification of critical watersheds as well as the updating of the following maps: village boundaries, land cover, service locations and natural features. We highlight how the mapping initiative facilitates participatory resource planning and ensures local ownership of the GIS outputs.
