Title

VITIVI, A GIS WEB APPLICATION FOR THE MANAGEMENT OF THE GRAPE HARVEST OF THE MASIA BACH AND CODORNIU WINERIES  

Abstract

Vitivi is a GIS web application to support decision making by managers of the grape harvest of  Codorniu wineries in the Penedés region of Catalonia, Spain, as well as a system for communication between those managers and local suppliers of grapes at harvest time.

 

Specifically, this new working environment should make it easier to see the spatial distribution of parcels according to the degree of ripeness of the grapes, thereby allowing managers to make grape harvesting decisions, such as, which areas have to be harvested sooner or which type of wine and of what quality can be made from each parcel. Furthermore, the application can be used to facilitate collaboration between Codorniu and the local growers who provide the grapes.

      Broadly speaking, the application can be used to:

 

●        create thematic maps (administrator user)

●        manage data loading (administrator user)

●        determine and manage the grape quality of each parcel (provider user)

●        update the data from each parcel used in the grape harvest (provider user)

 

Specifically, the project comprises:

 

●        Basic cartography

-         geoservices (WMS) of the Cartographic Institute of Catalonia (corresponding to topographic and orthophoto maps at 1:5000 / 1:25000 scales)

-         geoservices (WMS) of the cadastral map

-         the cartography of the boundaries of the viticultural parcels of the study region (Masía Bach and Codorniu wineries).

●        A relational database: PostgreSQL with PostGIS.

●        A GIS web application. This is a multi-user extranet application based on WEB technology and made up of an interface of grape producers or providers for Codorniu and an administrator interface (the Agricultural Division of Codorniu). This application has been created with the following technical specifications:

 

-         WMS server: PHPMapScript

-         php: Zend Framework, PHPDoctrine, PHPMapScript

-         JavaScript: jQuery, OpenLayers

-         Data base manager: PostgreSQL + PostGIS
