Title

SQUEEZE: CONFIGURING MAPSERVER AND KML TO GET THE MOST OUT OF GOOGLE EARTH

Abstract

With over 500 million downloads, Google Earth has emerged as the world stage for your web map services. The Province of British Columbia has gained considerable experience in using both MapServer and KML to publish twenty-four web map services containing over 2,000 map layers.

Informed by this experience, we will show you the strengths and weaknesses of Google Earth as a WMS platform, how to support feature identification in Google Earth using getFeatureInfo and the new output templating features in MapServer, how to optimize the performance of your KML ground overlays, how to define dynamic legends in KML using getLegendGraphic, how to use network links to automate distribution of WMS changes, the perils of polygons, and the wrath of regionation.
